In my personal opinion, Her could easily be considered the greatest romance movie of our generation. This is partially because I'm not a huge fan of romantic film and I think this movie went off the preverbal "romance" rails by not having a depressing setting in a depressing city, and partially because I am a huge fan of Sci-Fi film. I was worried that I would be disappointed in the Sci-Fi aspects of the movie but fortunately I was surprised by the plausibility of the technology displayed.
One of the things that Her manages to do that I wasn't expecting is it makes you think about the problems relationships might face in the future while simultaneously making us look at the problems we face today and recognize that there's a good chance that those problems will never go away. Imagining having a relationship in which a person and an AI are together while the AI has a surrogate human to give the AI a "body" is insane to think about and I'm not sure how well that would work in our society today. And yet, towards the end of the movie the two lovers manage to fight about the fact that Samantha breathes too much which is quite reminiscent of fights about nothing that occur quite frequently in modern relationships.
I thought the music was amazingly done as well as the splashes of color thrown into specific scenes that really added to the sense of what the mood of the scene was going to be before any dialogue or action began. The music really interested me because it seemed that any time music was playing, it was being listened to or composed by the characters in the movie, really dragging the viewer into the scenes in a unique way, especially when Theodore and Samantha were singing a song together while Theodore strummed the ukulele.
Before the movie began I was apprehensive when my classmate said she couldn't watch it the entire way through because of how boring it was but as soon as it began I had no problem staying interested in what was happening on the screen. The addition of comedic scenes and characters thrown into the movie definitely kept a light mood about the film when particularly sad things were happening yet still managed to maintain a serious tone throughout.
Overall I would give this movie an 87% because I found it to be a truly great movie with a great story to tell. Coming from my point of view, not liking romance films, I was pleasantly surprised by my interest in both the characters and the scenery. The wonderfully selected music was just the icing on the cake of this amazing film.
